What Is Limonene?

Cannabis contains many cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes. Limonene, also called dlimonene, is a monoterpene found in the resin glands of the cannabis flower. Terpenes are chemical compounds (and natural fragrant oils) responsible for giving marijuana its aromatic and flavor profile.

Limonene is thought to be the third most abundant of all the hundreds of terpenes found in a variety of cannabis plants. More specifically, it is responsible for the zesty, citrus-lemony aroma noticed in a variety of strains. As with other terpenes, it works together with cannabinoids and flavonoids to produce unique medicinal effects. The chemical compound is also found in other plants such as mint, rosemary, anise, orange, lemon, lime, and ginger. The distinctive scent is more noticeable in the fruit peels of citruses.

Limonene Structure

The terpene limonene is a colorless liquid and is a member of the hydrocarbon family. In terms of chemical structure, it consists of a mixture of hydrogen and carbon atoms that cling together to form a double bond. Within the terpene are two compounds with similar molecules called d-limonene and l-limonene. D-limonene forms naturally in the marijuana flower and the peels of citrus fruits.

Limonene Terpene Effects

Limonene is present in a range of indica, sativa, and hybrid weed species and products. Some are available at HWY 420 weed dispensary in Silverdale and Bremerton, WA. Consumers are drawn to products rich in limonene terpene because of the positive effects on feelings and mood.

Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, limonene effects do not cause a ‘high feeling’. However, limonene interacts with THC, cannabidiol (CBD), and other specific terpenes to increase their effectiveness. Working together in synergy is what is called the entourage effect. The more terpenes and cannabinoids the strain contains, the more powerful the effects are likely to be.

The double-bonded terpene is also believed to have the ability to minimize the risk of anxiety caused by THC. That is because of the limonene structure, profile, and effects on the body’s endocannabinoid system. On top of that, researchers suggest that d-limonene may help to enhance the sedative or stress-relieving effects of other terpenes and cannabinoids. The heightened effects stem from how it interacts with the CB1 cannabis receptors in the brain and body.

What are the Potential Limonene Benefits?

Terpenes provide a range of medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Researchers confirmed this again in a 2020 study. Limonene benefits the body due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and antidepressant abilities. Antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, anticancer, and antifungal activities are also noticeable. Both medical marijuana consumers and recreational users may benefit from limonene terpene effects and therapeutic abilities. Limonene terpene present in flower buds, concentrates, edibles, and topicals may be beneficial in the following ways::

  • Relieve stress
  • Calm anxiety
  • Improve depressive mood
  • Boost immune function
  • Block fungal growth
  • Slow cancer cell growth
  • Reduce free radicals in the body causing oxidative stress
  • Relieve heartburn and gastric reflux
  • Improve absorption of other terpenes into the body

Meanwhile, researchers are still trying to determine how the chemical compound works in the brain and body’s endocannabinoid system to achieve those beneficial effects.
