Annette’s Cannabis Chronicles: Can Cannabis Support Bone Health in Our Golden Years?

Hello again, friends!
If you’re like me, you’ve probably had a doctor mention bone density at some point—and maybe even the word osteopenia or osteoporosis. I’ve been managing osteopenia for years now. It’s one of those conditions that sneaks up quietly but demands full attention as we age.
Today, I want to talk about something I’ve been exploring for over a decade: the potential role of cannabis—especially CBD—in supporting bone health.

A Personal Note on My Bone Journey

About ten years ago, I started using CBD regularly—not for my bones initially, but for general wellness and pain management. Along the way, I also committed to lifting weights, being more intentional with my nutrition, and making lifestyle changes focused on supporting long-term bone health.
Well, here’s the surprise: on my most recent bone scan, my spinal bone density had increased.
Now, I’m not saying CBD gets all the credit. It’s hard to pinpoint what worked most. But I can’t help but wonder if this plant has been quietly helping in the background—supporting my bones while I went about my daily routine.

Understanding the Science: Cannabis, CBD, and Bone Health

One of the most fascinating discoveries I’ve come across is our body’s internal system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system helps regulate everything from mood and appetite to sleep, pain—and yes, bone remodeling. Our bones contain cannabinoid receptors, especially CB2, which play a critical role in maintaining bone mass and reducing bone breakdown.

Foundational studies have demonstrated these important connections:

Beyond the ECS framework, research into CBD’s effects on bone healing and prevention of bone loss shows promise across different models:

  • 👉 Ihejirika-Lomedico et al., Calcified Tissue International, 2023 – showed CBD prevented osteoporosis in animals and stimulated bone cell growth and gene activity in human stem cells (in vitro)
    • 👉 Kogan et al., Bone, 2015 – demonstrated CBD stimulated collagen crosslinking and improved biomechanical strength during fracture healing in animal models (Raphael Mechoulam, one of my cannabis heroes pictured on my blog intro, was part of this study)

These studies span animal research, human cell work, and in vitro experiments, offering encouraging early evidence—though more clinical research is needed to fully understand CBD’s effects in humans.

CBD’s Anti-Inflammatory Benefits for Joint and Bone Comfort

Another benefit worth mentioning is CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties. While not bone-specific, CBD may help reduce discomfort in joints and tissues around bones, supporting mobility and recovery:

For folks in their 60s, 70s, and beyond, that kind of gentle support can make a real difference.

Tips for Using Cannabis to Support Bone Health

If you’re curious about trying CBD or cannabis as part of your bone health journey, here’s what’s worked for me—and what I often suggest to others:

  • Start slow: Especially if you’re new to cannabis. A low, steady dose is best.
    • Stick with quality: Use lab-tested, full-spectrum CBD from trusted sources like HWY 420.
    • Make it part of a bigger plan: Keep lifting weights, eat leafy greens and calcium-rich foods, and stay active.
    • Talk to your doctor: Especially if you have osteopenia or take other medications. Your provider can help you safely integrate cannabis into your wellness routine.

Wrapping It Up

Bone health might not be glamorous—but it is empowering. Knowing we have options beyond pharmaceuticals gives me hope. CBD may not be a miracle cure, but for me, it’s become a meaningful part of staying upright, strong, and independent.
As always, I encourage you to stay curious, ask questions, and keep exploring.

Stay strong, stay curious.
